Notio viri placet (3 of 9min)
Music: Jan Erik Mikalsen
The title is Latin and translates loosely into “his idea is good”. Each singer was filmed alone, and the individual recordings were combined into a coherent composition, with all the vocals mixed together into a choir. The singers are all from the boys choir NRK Sølvguttene (The Norwegian State Broadcasting’s Boys Choir). The musical composition lasts for approximately 1.5 minutes, with 7 minutes quiet intermission, before the cycle starts all over again. During the long intermission the subjects all gaze immobile into the camera. All filming was done at NRKs (The Norwegian State Broadcasting’s) studios at Marienlyst in Oslo. All subjects were filmed in front of a blue-screen which was later replaced with an animation. The complete work is cut into a full HD-Video sequence.
An Evening in the Capital (4 of 12 min.)
It was recorded in Pyongyang in North-Korea. I was part of a group of Norwegian folk musicians and dancers invited to the yearly international culture festival “The April spring friendship art festival” of North Korea. I experienced that it was hard to achieve anything on your own as part of this huge festival. All the participants were transported together in busses, and the events themselves were very crowded. The only coherent film sequence I was able to record was out through the bus window. The recordings where utilized, a couple of years later, in the film “An evening in the Capital”. The resulting film has reduced speed and is mirrored vertically. It features music from the North-korean pop group “Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble”
